“Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.” Hippocrates
It’s getting colder outside! As the temperatures drop you need to fuel your system with nutrient dense food to keep you healthy throughout the winter months. One of these healthy and delicious foods is GARLIC! We have garlic in our deliveries almost weekly – and with good reason! – in addition to adding some pretty awesome flavor to our meals, it boasts a number of health benefits, including:
Garlic boosts the immune system and can combat sickness, including the common cold
The active compounds in garlic can reduce blood pressure
Garlic can help beat inflammation
Garlic can help improve cholesterol levels
Garlic is a great source of antioxidants
Garlic contains allicin, which can help protect us from heart disease and cancer – but the allicin is only activated if the garlic has been chopped, minced or crushed and if you let it sit out for 5-10 min before heating it! Heating it too early will kill the cancer-fighting properties…
There you go, maybe add an extra clove to your next meal, but make sure to take the time to let it sit for a few minutes before you cook it!
Happy Cooking!
